As the holiday season approaches, social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram are brimming with festive decorating ideas. While these trends might look appealing, some could pose risks to your kitchen’s interiors if not carefully considered. Here are a few popular Christmas trends to approach with caution:

Christmas Foliage.

“One of the more concerning trends circulating social media is decorating your kitchen with Christmas foliage that ends up too close to cooking areas. From draping garlands over range hoods to placing festive candles and greenery on countertops, these setups can become hazardous if not handled properly.

Kitchens are often the heart of the home during the holiday season, used frequently for hosting and cooking, and having flammable decorations near your hob significantly increases the risk of fire. Official UK fire statistics show that house fires are most common in December, making it essential to avoid any flammable decorations near heat sources. Always move any foliage and other decor well away from the hob while cooking to ensure safety and prevent any long-term damage to your kitchen.”

Gift Wrapped Cabinets.

A growing trend on TikTok and Instagram involves tying ribbons around kitchen cabinets to create a ‘gift-wrapped’ look. While this festive trend seems harmless, if not properly put up could cause lasting damage to your cabinetry.

The thickness of the ribbons might prevent cabinet doors from closing properly, which can strain hinges over time - especially with frequent use during the holidays. Opt for thinner, flexible ribbons and ensure they don’t interfere with the functionality of your cabinets.

Additionally, ribbon is flammable, so it’s important to cut bows to size and position them far from heat sources like the hob to prevent fire hazards.”

Tinsel.

“Maximalist Christmas decor, including nostalgic and eclectic styles like rainbow-coloured tinsel, is making a comeback on social media. While charming and vibrant, such decorations can be risky when placed near lit candles.

Tinsel is highly flammable, and its proximity to open flames could lead to accidents. To avoid mishaps, keep tinsel and other festive decor away from candles, especially in the kitchen where heat and flames are common.”

Snow Spray.

“Snow spray and frosted window designs are popular decorative elements this year. However, applying these sprays to kitchen or bathroom windows can lead to long-term issues. Cooking vapours and bathroom condensation can cause the spray to deteriorate or damage your windows over time.

On top of this, snow spray decorations can be hard to remove, leading to people often having to use abrasive, tough cleaning materials that can leave long-lasting scratch marks on windows.

As a safer alternative, consider using peel-and-stick decals that are renter-friendly and easy to remove. Test one before committing to a full design to ensure it’s easy to apply and remove without leaving residue on your windows.

By decorating thoughtfully and prioritising safety, you can enjoy a beautifully adorned home this Christmas without risking damage to your kitchen or other spaces.”
